Shuttle Box Observation3/2/2023 DISCOVERING THE FREE OPERANT CHOICE BETWEEN LIGHT AND SHADE Blaberus discoidalis are largely unappreciated in the non-vertebrate research in empirical journals. When comparing the vast amount of cockroach research of other species to that of the Discoids, the research on Blaberus discoidalis is severely lacking. Here we present a preliminary study designed to evaluate behavioral preference for shade in discoids. Understanding the functional impact of light vs. shade is important in its own sake and in terms of the possibility of using illumination as a negative reinforcer for studies of learning and memory in this species. The aim of the study is to test the hypothesis that when given a free operant choice between light and shade roaches will spend more time in the shade. Establishing this preference will add to the body of knowledge demonstrating mixed results in terms of shade seeking in the roach as well as establishing evidence that light can function as a negative reinforcer for operant behaviors.
